If you have ever sprinted down a dimly lit corridor, shotgun in hand, heart pounding as something growls around the corner, you have felt the influence of id Software. You may not know the name immediately, but you know its children. Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, Quake. These aren't just games. They are the blueprint for an entire industry.
id Software is one of the very few studios that can legitimately claim they didn't just participate in video game history — they wrote the first few chapters and then kept rewriting the rules. For more than 30 years, this small team from Mesquite, Texas has operated on a simple, powerful philosophy: great technology enables great gameplay, and great gameplay is all that matters.
Here is the full story of how four young programmers changed everything.
The Garage Days: From Softdisk to Superstars
The origin story of id Software reads like a classic American tech legend, except with more pizza and less sleep.
In late 1990, John Carmack, John Romero, Tom Hall, and Adrian Carmack were working together at Softdisk, a company in Shreveport, Louisiana that shipped monthly floppy disks full of programs. They were the Geniuses of the place — the guys who could make computers do things no one else thought possible.
John Carmack, famously quiet and intensely focused, had just cracked a huge problem: how to make a PC scroll smoothly sideways. At the time, that was a big deal. Nintendo had Mario, but PCs didn't. Carmack built a demo that cloned the first level of Super Mario Bros. 3 on PC, running perfectly. It was called Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement, as a joke.
The team saw the future. They left Softdisk and on February 1, 1991, they founded id Software. The name was simple — it came from Freud's id, the primal, instinctive part of the mind. It fit perfectly. They weren't making polite puzzle games. They wanted to make games about pure instinct: survival, speed, and shooting.
Their early contract work for Apogee Software produced Commander Keen, a charming side-scrolling platformer that proved shareware could make real money. But Keen was just the warm-up. The team wanted to go first-person.
1992: The Big Bang of 3D
In 1992, id released Wolfenstein 3D. Today it looks blocky, but in 1992 it was an earthquake.
Before Wolfenstein, most PC games were top-down or side-on. Wolfenstein put YOU in the game. You saw through the eyes of B.J. Blazkowicz, escaping a Nazi castle. The walls were textured, the guns bobbed as you ran, and the doors opened with a satisfying hiss. It was fast, violent by the standards of the day, and utterly immersive.
The key innovation wasn't just the 3D perspective. It was speed. Carmack's engine was so optimized that it ran at 60 frames per second on hardware that other programmers thought could barely manage 10. The team also pioneered the shareware model. They gave away the first episode for free on bulletin board systems (the early internet). If you liked it, you mailed them money for the rest. Millions did.
Wolfenstein 3D is now widely credited as the game that created the first-person shooter genre.
But they were just getting started.
1993: DOOM Changes the World
If Wolfenstein was the Big Bang, DOOM was the formation of galaxies.
Released as shareware on December 10, 1993, DOOM was unlike anything anyone had ever seen. It had moody, atmospheric lighting. It had floors and ceilings with different heights. It had a map you could pull up. It had shotguns, chainsaws, demons from hell, and an iconic heavy metal-inspired soundtrack by Bobby Prince.
More importantly, it had attitude. DOOM didn't have a long cutscene explaining the lore. The manual gave you one paragraph: You're a space marine, demons invaded, shoot them. That was it. The game respected the player enough to get out of the way and let them play.
Technologically, DOOM was a masterclass. Carmack invented new tricks like binary space partitioning to render its world impossibly fast. Culturally, it was a phenomenon. It was installed on more computers than Windows 95 in 1995. It created the word "deathmatch," coined by John Romero for DOOM's multiplayer. It created modding as we know it. id intentionally left the game files open — the famous WAD files — so players could make their own levels. Thousands did. The community is still active today, 30 years later.
DOOM also sparked controversy, as any truly revolutionary piece of art does. It was debated in the Senate. But id never chased controversy; they chased fun. That focus is why DOOM endured while other shock-value games faded.
In 1994, DOOM II: Hell on Earth refined everything and added the Super Shotgun, one of the most satisfying weapons ever designed.
1996: Quake and the Move to True 3D
By 1995, other companies were cloning DOOM. Id's response? Make them all obsolete again.
Quake, released in 1996, was the first truly 3D game. In DOOM, enemies were 2D sprites that always faced you. In Quake, everything — walls, monsters, weapons — was made of 3D polygons. You could look up and down. You could jump across rooms that existed fully in three dimensions. It was dizzying.
The development of Quake was difficult and fractured the original team. Tom Hall had already left, and after Quake, John Romero and the company parted ways. But the product was undeniable. Quake's engine also laid the foundation for modern online gaming. QuakeWorld added client-side prediction, the netcode trick that makes online shooters playable even with lag. Without it, there is no esports as we know it.
It also gave us QuakeCon, the annual LAN party in Dallas where fans bring their PCs and play for days. It started as a small gathering and became a ritual, a testament to the community id had built.
The Engine Business: id Tech
While players loved the games, developers loved the engines.
Carmack understood something early: a game engine is more valuable than a single game. From id Tech 1 (the DOOM engine) through id Tech 2 (Quake), id Tech 3 (Quake III Arena), id Tech 4 (DOOM 3), and beyond, id licensed its technology to other studios. Half-Life, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor — all of them trace their DNA back to id's code.
id Tech 3, used for Quake III Arena in 1999, was particularly influential. It was built for pure multiplayer speed and its source code was so clean and elegant that universities used it to teach game programming.
This engine-first mindset is why id survived where many 90s studios did not. They weren't just making games; they were building the tools that everyone else needed to make games.
The Darker Hallway: DOOM 3 and a Change of Hands
In 2004, id returned with DOOM 3. Instead of run-and-gun chaos, it was a slow, terrifying horror game. Carmack's new id Tech 4 engine introduced unified dynamic lighting and shadows. Every flashlight flicker cast a real shadow. It was technically stunning, though some fans missed the old speed.
The industry around id was changing. Game budgets were ballooning to hundreds of millions. Being independent was getting harder.
In 2009, id Software was acquired by ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks. For many fans, this was the end of an era. In 2013, John Carmack, the last of the original founders, left to work on virtual reality at Oculus.
Many thought that was the end of id.
It was actually a rebirth.
The Modern Renaissance: 2016 and Beyond
On May 13, 2016, id Software, now led by director Marty Stratton and creative director Hugo Martin, with a new generation of engineers building the id Tech 6 engine, released simply DOOM.
It was perfect.
It threw out the horror slowdown of DOOM 3 and asked one question: What if DOOM but faster, more brutal, and more metal than ever before? The result was a game that critics called one of the best shooters in 15 years. The Glory Kill system, the push-forward combat, the incredible Mick Gordon soundtrack — it all clicked. It respected the past without being trapped by it.
Its sequel, DOOM Eternal (2020), doubled down. It turned combat into a chess match at 200 miles per hour. You had to constantly juggle guns, chainsaw for ammo, flamethrower for armor, and chainsaw for health. It was exhausting and exhilarating. It proved id could still define what a shooter should feel like.
Today, id Software operates as part of Microsoft, after Microsoft acquired ZeniMax in 2021. The studio is based in Richardson, Texas, and is currently working on DOOM: The Dark Ages, a medieval-inspired prequel.
Why id Still Matters
You can summarize id's legacy in three principles that any blogger, developer, or creator can learn from:
1. Technology should serve feeling, not the other way around. Carmack never built tech to show off. He built it to make you feel faster, more immersed, more terrified. Frame rate is a gameplay feature.
